Frank Zappa "One Shot Deal"

A couple years ago, I acquired a complete discography of Frank Zappa's works and some bootleg concert recordings. For those unaware, this turned out to be roughly 10 gigs of music. Then, in 2008, they apparently found 9 more songs that had never been released from across Frank Zappa's career. They put it in a box, called it "One Shot Deal" and promptly began selling it for $16.

The thing about this CD that differentiates it from all of the Zappa albums that are not compilations is the fact that most Zappa albums tell some sort of story or have a common style. This one contains songs from throughout his career. As an album alone, it is terrible because there is little to no cohesion between the songs.

Browsing through the songs, my eye was immediately caught by track 8 - Australian Yellow Snow. This excited me because there is a song on his album "Apostrophe (')" called Don't Eat the Yellow Snow which I enjoy a large amount. Except the Australian version is 10 minutes longer. The cause for the extra 10 minutes turns out to be a delightful guitar solo in the middle.

As for the rest of the album, I was a little less than impressed. All the other songs except for track 7 were completely instrumental. Not that this is a bad thing, but the thing that makes Zappa different from other experimental jam bands is the pagentry that goes on during the songs and the themes carried through the album.

In terms of rating this album, it is easily one of the worst Zappa albums. But, this still make it better than the majority of music being played on radios and produced. If you are a big fan of Zappa and are looking for something you have not heard by him, this album falls in that category. For those unsure and curious about Zappa, this album is not for you. I'd recommend Strictly Commercial for you. Then, if you are still curious, give it a shot.

This album came to my attention through the esteemed Mr. Gieser (above). While I like the album as a record of the late great Zappa, there are really only a couple of songs that i would put on my iPod (those will come later). It is interesting that the people who put this album together, presumably his family, included a song that illustrates a musical technique that Zappa himself INVENTED called "xenochrony".

This technique requires a studio due to the process involved: a specific musical lead (say, a guitar solo) is extracted from one song and placed entirely out of context into a completely different song. Like musical chairs, but with music instead of people.

the problem with its placement in this album, is that it has no place; all of the cuts are live, so it sounds like he cant play, which could be a testament to his memorizational skills, if he were playing live. This is ironic given that the placement is out of context, the name of the technique means out of context, everything is out of context, which sounds like Dweezil's sense of humor to me rather than Frank's.

Either way, this is a good record of Zappa's live performances of rare songs, some never even having been recorded in a studio, however it doesnt quite do justice to his discography or the way he changed throughout his career. Like the guy above said, if you buy Strictly Commercial and like it, then try this one out.

It all started with Little Richard in the 1950’S, America’s first queen of rock music. That pop sensibility combined with the way that England ate up American trends in music, and you have the art obsessed, trendy suit, pop conscienced Mods, who followed Little Richard’s moves, by wearing mascara and lacquering their hair down.

By the time the Swinging Sixties were over, the Mods were gone, and in their place were Glam rockers. The movement, led by the Americans with Alice Cooper, the New York Dolls, Lou Reed, and in England by Marc Bolan and T. Rex, David Bowie, and Brian Eno, was a revolt against the free love of the hippies, the social concern of the folkies and the political rockers; Glam was about surface and excess.

It’s hard to determine where exactly Glam started, as the movement happened nearly simultaneously on both sides of the ocean. In America, Alice Cooper took the direction of L.A. managers’ suggestions and started wearing glitter makeup and sequined shirts and platforms merely to create a scandal. On the other side of the coast the New York Dolls, when not so fucked up on drugs that they couldn’t play, could actually string together a few chords, they were mediocre at best and were more of a sensation not based on actual skill but because they were a straight drag band. The Dolls’ only hits were in controversy, at first as a “gay band” then, after Malcolm McLaren (later the brains behind the Sex Pistols and punk music) arrived as a producer, he tried changing the controversy from queer to communist, having the band appear in oublic in red leather clothes and draped in Russian and Chinese flags, hoping to rile patriotic Americans.

At this same time, also in New York, Lou Reed’s David Bowie-produced album Transformer showed up in April of 1972. The album, arguably one of the greatest releases, celebrates the seedy side of life in New York, prostitution, underground homosexuality, drug use, heroin, and sadism. Reed’s focus on these sleazy subjects ensured that his album would not receive much commercial attention, but in the music world, it blew up. Glam, in America, was everywhere and the “happening” thing.

Around this time in England, Brian Eno joined Roxy Music and manipulated sounds through a synthesizer switchboard. His take on this was to do it in a feather boa, platform shoes and glitter makeup. Internal struggles saw him kicked out/leaving the band and his next project, with similar sound manipulation duties was with King Crimson. After a few albums with Crimson, he left shortly, working merely as a producer, but during this period in the early seventies, his moonlighting career saw him producing David Bowie, who promptly took the bit of wearing makeup and implied bisexuality in his own side band the Spiders From Mars.

Yet during all of this, Marc Bolan’s T. Rex was wearing frocks, dancing with each other on stage, and singing weird, layered, heavily dense songs about space age love and boy toys. You see how this all happening at once, nearly simultaneously, makes the origins of Glam rock difficult to trace. It is easier to follow as many bands simply imploded or were destroyed by excess in sex or drugs, killed in simple accidents or went solo/in a different direction.

Eno later produced Lou Reed’s album Berlin as well as David Bowie’s Berlin trilogy at HANSA Studios in Berlin. Also produced here, by Eno, were the sessions for Achtung, Baby by U2 as well as the Bowie-produced Iggy Pop album The Idiot (unfortunately, HANSA Studios are now defunct, the last recording session ever commited to tape being Einstgurzende Neubaten.

After Glam, punk came, followed in the Eighties by New Wave, which was then followed by a queercore movement in the early Nineties (not the singer-songwriter stuff, the band oriented stuff) by bands such as Mindless Self Indulgence and Placebo, who were influenced more by Bowie’s Glam albums than by anything else.

At this time, the movie Velvet Goldmine (name taken from a Bowie song about the joys of making out with another man) chronicles a parallel timeline with fictionalized bands and people whose origins are obvious. Jack Fairy is Brian Eno. Curt Wild is at first an Iggy Pop reference (wild stage presence) but becomes a Lou Reed reference (underwent EST as a child because of sexual promiscuity and interest, as well as the connections to Brian Eno/Jack Fairy). Brian Slade is David Bowie. Slade’s band, The Venus in Furs, is a direct reference to a Lou Reed song when he was in the Velvet Underground. Placebo play a band like the Damned, interested in cabaret, but still punk with gothic tendencies.

I also would like to point out that Alice Cooper is copied by Marilyn Manson almost to a tee. Alice Cooper was originally the band name, then he took the name himself and went solo. Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids was the band that Brian Warner fronted then became Marilyn Manson and the Spooky kids took different names like Gidget Gein, etc. My Father, who was an Alice Cooper fan, saw the Marilyn Manson scare-craze in the mid-Nineties as ridiculous because things that Manson did that were played up in the media, like animal abuse, Satanic practices, etc., were all things that Alice Cooper got played up for in the Seventies.

Music seems cyclical. I think we’re headed for a New Wave phase. I’m just gonna be tuning up a lap steel, cos that’s the next logical step for “hip, indie bands” to take.

Suppose something that, say, allowed same-sex marriage was actually passed somewhere, you would think that when that same issue, having already been passed, would not be brought up again for a vote.

Some vile motherfuckers actually voted to have this issue, Prop (H)8 but on the ballot to remove same-sex marriage from the state of California, and by having this passed, the same proposition changed the wording of the constitution of California to define marriage as 'between a man and a woman'.

Fuck that shit.

If you want to get married, get married. By having the term changed from marriage to civil union, it is my belief that there is an implied message of 'you're not good enough to be married 'for real, for real'.

Being married, in the eyes of law, may work this way but you can say that you are married to someone without having a certificate. Taking away that word from the same-sex couples who do, in fact, commit themselves to one another, is wrong, and bullish, and belligerent. If marriage is so sacred, why are so many of the religious right found in stripclubs, with hookers, fucking little boys, or divorced?

Not that there is anything wrong with any of those things (except for fucking little boys) but when the arguement is made that marriage is 'a sacred union that is entered into before the eyes of God by a woman and a man', then where is the justice there? Are atheists not married? Are Muslims not married? (this brings up another question: whose God? My God is certainly not my neighbors God or anyone else'. The definition of God is different for everyone, which is another entirely different post right there...)

WTF is wrong with people. Queers wanna marry? Let 'em. If anyone is ready, willing and able to make a lifelong commitment to another person, then do the right thing and fucking well LET THEM!!

Also, I really hope that at some point the race card is not used in association with why Obama won. That just makes it seem like he won because of a token gesture on the parts of voters to get a black man in office, which i dont think it was. I think it was the voice of people tired of a Republican in office and honestly want change.

Also, it is amazing to me how everyone joined in bars and living rooms watching the results. It makes me wish I remembered to send off for an absentee ballot, if only because I feel like i missed out on something dramatically historically and special in our times.

I hope that he can regain America's dignity on the world stage. If he cant, I dont know who can.

So I think, even though she didnt necessrily like it, that Easy Rider was a success. It made her angry, which is always a good thing, when a piece of literature, film or art can make someone feel an emotion so strongly...

Watching I Am Legend right now. I wish i had a big screen when i watch it. The opening hunting scene is so cool...especially when i imagine what it would be like to drive a Mustang GT500 thru a deserted city and pick off food with an automatic weapon...does that make me a classical American male yet?

So after watching the remake of the Incredible Hulk, my opinions are:

1) Edward Norton is one of the best actors I've ever seen. He manages to play Bruce Banner like some sort of mix of Wandering Jew archetype and a junkie. How did he do his little method acting thing I wonder? Did he shoot up on steroids and beat the shit out of things?

and

2) Liv Tyler is the worst actor i think I have ever seen. Every line is that breathless, Lady Macbeth-style overacting that's completely bullshit, especially for someone that is supposedly of her caliber. It does wonders when your dad is Steven Tyler though, I guess. Seriously, when she's filming with Edward Norton and John Hurt, does she realise that she is as shitty as she is? Do they wince internally wheneve she reads her lines?

Anyway, i was pleasantly surprised at how good the movie was, Liv Tyler excluded. I hope that there is an Avengers movie coming out. Iron Man was good, this was good, the Spiderman movie (the first one at least) was good.

Right now I'm watching Easy Rider, one of my favorites, with the wife, who is dubious of its actual worth as a film. I MUST prove her wrong.

Also I'm reading Hells Angels by HST. I think that's why i wanted to watch this as well...

also, Blue Velvet is a wierd, fucked up movie. I've been thinking about it cos Shoeless keeps mentioning Mulholland Dr., another Lynch movie that's equally fucked up. Anyway, Lost Highway and Blue Velvet, along with Dune, are some of my favorite Lynch films, though velvet is so dense and complex that it kinda stands as a truly self referential film.

Oh, Wild At Heart is a kick ass sweet movie as well. And it involves and was shot in South Carolina, according to my dad.

Echo and The Bunnymen's Siberia is a great album. i got it for my dad for like Father's Day two years ago and he still listens to it in the car. Very expansive and mood-inducing.

so because my fiancee and i have been getting a lot of cards and mail recently i actually opened a letter that had been addressed in cursive and was an actual card and everything. after reading a line i realised that it was, in fact, a geico advertisement that had been addressed as a trick. fucking marketing people.

also, i love oreos.

the ladies man is a great movie. it has tim meadows. hes hilarious. also the girl that played hillary in fresh prince. thats also a great show.

shaft is also a very good movie. the original is great, i remember watching it with my dad when i was younger. but specifically i meant the one with samuel jackson. where else can you see a cuban guy squeeze one out while threatening to kill a guy (other than my apartment).

came back from a beutiful wedding in charleston (congratulation elizabeth and aj!)

made me wanna move to charleston, especially in the fall. i love the smell of sc in the fall, it just brings back so many memories...

also the architecure is amazing, the sideways houses, the porches down alleyways.

oh and if you can ever make it to charleston for any reason, go to the notso hostel. 30 dollars a night dorm, 65 a night private, shared bathrooms, free breakfast, great fellow travelers, walking distance of downtown. do it.

i think that my sweetie and i may be looking for things in atlanta closer to decatur/cabbagetown. depends on where i get a job, etc.

Good and Bad Choices When Travelling Long Periods of Time in A Car:

these are "bad" choices because when one is travelling at 80+ mph, these albums are so mellowing and seductive that one is likely to fall asleep/dose off whilst driving at said speed on cruise control.

good album choices:
black keys: magic potion
rasputina: frustration plantation
noisettes: what's the time, mr. wolf?

these are "good" choices because they are either so abrasively loud/head-bob-able-to that one will not nod off while driving fast. also give the listener a sense that someone is watching you in the backseat and disappears at the moment that the listener looks at them.

i found out that when given the choice of being lad off (with two weeks severance) and transferring, that when one too many people choose transferring, the district manager chooses to not do the paperwork and instead lays everyone off, except the manager. also the manager will not return my phone calls. either of them. so now i am jobless, but luckily have an interview with the manager at a buckhead location to finagle my way into a position of part time variety there. that meeting is on tuesday at 12. cant forget this. may luck out and get it, may luck out and not. ambivalent at this point, only ambivalence is not the right word, cos im not pulled strongly in either direction to be honest.

got the entirety of neon genesis evangelion, one of my favorite anime on dvd for christmas.

have slight sinus infection, for which i now have medication.

brother contracted mersa (staph infection) from locker room/swimming with the swim team for school credit. parents making him swim,, despite the over-all bad idea of doing so, but im not his parent.

drunk driver drove through my grandmother's kitchen after tearing up/spinning out on her neighbors lawn across the street. she was awoken by the stuff in her closet being thrown onto the bed where the truck hit the back of her closet in the bedroom. the driver then tried reversing but had sunk the truck up to the wheel wells so he just tore the shit out of the flooring and the counters and such in the kitchen. after someone this fucking drunk got out and got away on foot, the police could not find anyone. the guys that showed up that knew him from a party they were having gave some "bullshit story" according to my dad who was helping my grandmother fill out police reports, cos apparently she broke into half english half japanese and at one point entirely japanese so my dad acted as a rough translator. shes okay, just rattled. there is a big hole in her house, apparently, that is covered in plastic and sealed this way to keep people out.

new years obviously has a new prank in which you take off the caps to tires facing the street on parked cars and then breaking the stems so the tires go flat nigh immediately. we left a party at one and then got home at 6.30 (thanks to robbie and jen for refilling the tires and patching them!). changing a tire at 3-ish to 6-ish while stone drunk and pissed is an interesting experience, especially when you are the only one willing to lay on your back in the road to position the jack under a rivet in the car, when the jack is the only thing keeping your head from being squashed like a grape. made me feel more manly than i am/possibly was though.

thats how long its been since i slept. i feel like im going crazy...my skin feels like its moving, i feel loopy, i just got done hyperventilating to the point that i threw up lunch (and therefore a vitamin and a b-12 complex) (there goes $5.35), i may have in fact broken my finger by shutting it in the door of my car, i ran onto the curb and scraped up the undercarriage of my car, i feel shitty for other reasons, i need to get 4 weeks worth of listening assignments done, an evaluation and a listening assignment done, a music midterm done, study for an exam on friday, write a paper for next thursday, write another for the following tuesday, do three hundred pages of reading, and on top of all this bohart has asked me and anotehr student to prepare something for the symposium, which will also add stuff to my list. i feel like im on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and all i can do is curl into a ball on my bed and shake. not sleep, even though i want to desperately, but just sit and stare. insomnia is killing me and i want to be done with everything. i just wish that i could move on in my life and not worry about all this bullshit...
also i think i may have hurt someone important in my life (the only person i really love or care about) and i wish i could take back everything ive done thats been malicious or passive-aggressive toward her.

my stomach is in knots and that bottle of whiskey in the fridge is looking mighty good at letting me go to sleep. i just keep fidgeting and shaking and tossing and turning. i was feeling depressed, but now i feel even shittier and i have a feeling in a couple of hours, i will feel shitty even more on top of that. everything sucks and i dont know how i can fix it; all i do is cause problems and i dont help anything. maybe im shit. i feel like an asshole more and more and i dont like doing it. i feel like a waste of space and that everything i touch turns to shit.

i hate having thoughts like this...takes me back to like eighth grade, ninth grade, when i did bad shit to myself, then started drinking. ive been drinking since i was fifteen. it always helps for a while, but then when i go away from it for any period of time, i generally feel like this, depressed, angry with myself. being sober makes me have to look in the mirror and accept who i am, who i have become. very little has changed, but, then the things that have changed have impacted my life, given me a purpose, and made me feel better about myself.

i just need a break, im feeling burnt out. like a piece of toast. with butter. spread o thin and a little crispy, a little flaky.

i dont care about a lot of things right now. maybe two or three things spring to my mind that i actually care about. finals are not one of them. fuck it all.

also i need to find a job or at least somethng productive to be doing with my time: video stuff for erika, band stuff with peoples, anything. also a job would mean money. although ou should, by the 25th give me a check for 3500 dolares. they cannot keep a federally dispersed check longer than two weeks, no matter how much they wanna use it for other things. that should keep me set until at least summer.

i hate certain people, in that, if they were on fire, i probably would not piss on them to put them out. i dont wish ill upon them, but if ill things happened to them i would not be unhappy. small rather annoying girls are one of them. why should it be okay for her to tell me im a waste of human life, but when i call her a stupid twat/twit, all of a sudden im the bad guy? also, if your girlfriend starts saying shit that is offensive to someone and then that someone spits something back that is mean, possibly cruel or otherwise offensive, why should you butt in? especially if what was said is not physically threatening to her, just attacks her intelligence, character, and general upbringing? i mean, one is more damaging and insulting than the other, but if she starts shit, maybe she should finish shit...especially when she is the one making ad hominem attacks when someone makes an observation or states an opinion. fuck those bitches. actually i have decided that a lot of ou is starting to bite the big one. maybe its just me being ready to leave, but lots of people on the faculty, exfaculty, current students, alumni that still hang around, piss me off and i would be better off not dealing with them in my life. case closed. i hate people. surprise!

now for sleep. maybe in the morning ill fix meself some cottage cheese and pineapples, go for a stroll around the complex and start the bullshitting anew for the new semester of finals.
